Numeracy: families working it out together
The Australian Government has produced three brochures providing ideas and activities for families to use to assist their children's numeracy development and enjoyment. Numeracy skills are about using mathematical ideas in everyday situations.

In some families, teenage parties cause concern and controversy. There are considerable differences between families regarding what is thought to be appropriate at different stages of a student's development. These differences, together with the different expectations of teenagers and parents, can create problems when managing parties.
These days, every one needs advanced literacy and numeracy skills. The Federal Government has set benchmarks for achievement of literacy in Years 3 and 5.
What are Benchmarks?
What will Benchmarks are used for?
What are the Current Policies on how schools report to parents?
These and other question are addressed in the leaflet, Literacy and Numeracy - Answers to Parents' Questions about Benchmarks.Copies of this document are available from the Australian Parents Council, or viewed on line literacy and_numeracy.htm
This leaflet shows parents how they can play a vital role in supporting their child's literacy development by doing simple, everyday things within the family and home. Originally produced in English, the leaflets are also available in the following languages: Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese, Croatian, Madedonian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
A kit of three interactive workshops for parents about how they can be involved in their children's early literacy learning. The workshops are designed to be presented by parents to their parent peers in the early years of their children's schooling.
A presenter's manual is included in the kit along with overheads, handouts and activity sheets.
A report of the trials conducted on the program and a literature search of early literacy programs is also available.
