Research reveals importance of parental engagement in schooling
Minister for School Education Peter Garrett has welcomed the findings from the Family-School Partnership Bureau's research into parental engagement in secondary schooling.
"Parental engagement is central to ensuring every child receives a world class education," Mr Garrett said.
"The research by the Family-School Partnership Bureau showed that parents want a safe and supportive learning environment for their children, teachers who are engaging and passionate about their work, and a principal who provides strong leadership and engages with the school community.
"Parents reported that they are satisfied with the support they receive from schools, and that they place high importance on being informed and involved with their children's schooling.
"The research also highlighted a strong need for better communication between schools and families, particularly in the area of school decision-making."
Mr Garrett said all Australian governments have committed to the Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians, which highlights the need for partnerships between students, families and schools to maximise student engagement and achievement.
"The Family-School Partnership Bureau's research into parental engagement in secondary schooling contributes to our ongoing commitment to enhancing partnerships between families and schools," Mr Garrett said.
"The research builds on Australian Government initiatives which are focused on parental engagement in schooling, such as the My School website, which strengthens school accountability to parents and the community."
The Family-School Partnership Bureau is a joint venture of the Australian Parents Council and the Australian Council of State School Organisations.
