Parents of students attending non-government schools welcome the Gonski Report

MEDIA RELEASE

The Australian Parents Council (APC) has welcomed the release of the Gonski report.

The APC is especially pleased to note:

  • the strong recommendations relating to the funding needs of students with disabilities including those in Catholic and independent schools and
  • the acknowledgement of family and community engagement as one of the five key strategies required to achieve greater equity and improved educational outcomes.

"The report provides a plausible recipe for an overhaul of funding for schooling," said APC executive director Ian Dalton. "However, even the best recipe put together incompetently will give a less than satisfactory result. There is a lot of detail to be worked through over the coming months before the report's recommendations can be fleshed out."

APC looks forward to working with Mr Gonski and the Australian Government as this work is taken forward. A key to going forward will be collaboration between the Australian, state and territory governments to ensure an appropriately balanced responsibility for funding.
