On Friday 11 November the Parents & Friends Federation of WA was presented with its award as a semi-finalist in the 2011 Department of Indigenous Affairs Indigenous Service Award. The award was made in recognition of the Federations's work with Indigenous communities, which included delivering the Australian Parents Council's Indigenous Parents Factor: Successful learning in the early years at home and school (IPF) program. The Federation delivered IPF workshops to Indigenous parents and carers in regional locations including Kalgoorlie and Karratha.

The IPF program comprises a set of (3) workshops on how young Indigenous children:

  • Learn at home and school
  • Learn to read
  • Learn to write

A mathematics program has also recently been developed.

These workshops help parents and carers of Indigenous children (ages 0- 8 years)

  • learn about the importance of learning at home with family
  • learn about how schools help children to learn, read and write
  • learn some of the language schools use so that parents can be better equipped to be a part of their child's education.
